Thornton is a city the U.S. state of Colorado. It is considered a suburb of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metropolitan area. The city is located about 10 miles northeast of Denver, which is the state capital of Colorado.
According to the most recent census statistics, the city has a population of close to 119,000. Since 2000, the population of the city has grown by well over 80,000, making Thornton today the sixth most populous city in the state and the 213th most populous city in the country.
The city has a total area of 27 square miles.
There is not much history in Thornton. The area that makes up Thornton today was mostly nothing but farm land until 1953. This is when a man named Sam Hoffman purchased a lot about seven miles north of Denver.
The town that he laid out, which would become Thornton, was the first fully planned community in Adams County, Colorado. The city was named after Former Colorado Governor Dan Thornton.
From there, the city grew very quickly. By the end of 1955, Thornton had 5,500 residents and more than 1,200 homes.
Of course, since it is a suburb of the bigger cities such as Denver and Aurora, most of the people who live in Thornton do not work there. Most people living in the city commute to one of the larger cities of the metropolitan area for work.
In terms of recreation, Thornton has a lot to offer, especially when it comes to parks and trails.
The city has 81 city parks and nearly 2,000 acres of parks and open space, making it perfect for people who enjoy the outdoors.
The city features more than 80 miles of trails. There are also a couple golf courses in the city.
Some of the major highways that run through Thornton include I-25, I-76, SH 7, SH 44, SH 224, and E-470.
Since it is a suburb of Denver, the city is served by the Denver Regional Transportation District, which is what many people who live in Thornton and work in Denver use to get to work and back home.
Naturally, the Denver International Airport is the most important airport located close to the city as well.
Thornton has several shopping areas and malls as well, include the Larkridge Mall, Thornton Town Center, and Thorncreek Crossing Shopping Center.
Todd Helton, who is a Major League Baseball player, is one notable person who is from Thornton originally.
